No, you do not need a referral from your normal GP or any other doctor. You are able to book a consultation directly with Leaf Doctors. Our doctors prescribe in line with WA’s requirements, including checking ScriptCheckWA, Western Australia’s real-time prescription monitoring system, before prescribing Schedule 8 medicines.
Is natural medicine legal in WA?
Yes, complementary medicines, including alternative healthcare, are legal in Australia and have been since 2016. They must be prescribed by an AHPRA-registered doctor who works within Medical Board of Australia and TGA guidelines. In Western Australia, prescribing is also governed by the Medicines and Poisons Act 2014, the Medicines and Poisons Regulations 2016 and the Monitored Medicines Prescribing Code. Products containing THC are Schedule 8 medicines, and additional approvals from the WA Department of Health are required in some cases, such as prescribing to patients under 18. There are regulations around driving, operating machinery, and travel when it comes to alternative healthcare, and it’s important that you discuss these during your consultation.

What are the laws around driving in WA?
In Western Australia, it is an offence to drive with THC present in your system, including where it is from a legally prescribed medicine. THC may remain detectable after its effects have worn off. Your doctor will discuss any relevant driving considerations with you during your consultation.
